Reformative Social Infrastructure
This project is the redesign of an office park typology questioning the significance of outdated corporate systems in the current social network driven by the technological advancement. The method is converting the enormous corporate infrastructure, such as its specialized and costly spaces and tools, into resources for its local community. This infrastructure supplements local and physical interactions which had been lacking This new office park typology utilizes existing unorganized parking lots as its site to remove programmatic discontinuity around them and take advantage of parking users to intensify its program.

This project focuses on film/movie studios because the internet and its video-posting services raise public demand concerning their involvement in production and a rejection of corporate movie industries. The project begins with the study of long-span structure which can be applied to any different potential program. Details were implanted to give a specificity to the movie production. An internal space of the structure, which was a by-product of its structural integrity, provides office environment, and this office embedded structure becomes an enclosure of studio space as well as a circulation to connect different studios.

Experimental Web Presence

The origin of MECHAfushigi.com, “MAKA FUSHIGI’ can be translated into mystery in English. The term OPTMYST.com came from the combination of optical and mystery. The goal of the activity is to design by visualizing inspired phenomena archived in MECHAfushigi.com and showcase them in OPTYMYST.com.

While usability of web performances can be destructed by extremely subtle incongruity with the speed expected today, the users’ familiarities with interfaces seem to dictate its satisfaction. Thus, although designers develop designs to aim high usability, unless these designs become standardized, their efficiencies in providing information are limited. On the other hand, the successful expansion of blogs is due to the juxtaposition between its standardized format and the fact that information traffic is relied on text based data format.

Therefore, instead of developing interfaces based on usability, I believe that interfaces themselves can be designed to attract visitors. Its engines are visual, tactile and kinematic experiences performed by the interface. OPTMYST.com was set up not only to showcase products but also to experiment self-attraction. I would like to keep the space mysterious and premature to invoke the future growth and imaginations.

Local Assistance on Global Merge

The project initiates with the design of a component that creates different degrees of apertures depending on a curvature of the whole surface. Then an armature system was programmed to create surfaces with different degrees of curvatures. These two systems enabled to test different reactions of local components in different global curvature. The site conditions, hydraulic forces of the East River and the traffic densities, inform two different armature systems and derive deformations of an existing rectangular pier. Series of two different surface conditions were explored to conduct a final enclosed space that supports its programmatic space for a marine research center.
The resultant apertures, not only providing lighting conditions, provide working surfaces that also directly connect to underwater heritages depending on their diverse resultant heights. Two surfaces, one informed by the water and the other by the land, fuse into one another to compose structural columns, where the deformations are their maximum. This structural surface gradually transforms from the land to the water in its sectional views and it also transgresses the initial bounds of the existing pier to be parasitic on an urban fabric in its site plan.

In response to the environmental deterioration of the rice terraces in Banaue in Philippines, what it is proposed is series of programmatically reactive componentry which allows for the simultaneous existence of the two dominant functional typologies of tourism and agriculture.

The architecture continuously exists in a state of duality where the half lives are extended through temporal transformation, viewing platforms become solar cells, structural units exist as vessels for grain storages, and dwellings become the scaffolds for communal markets. By flowing through the veins of the artificial topography, holistic body of the architecture seeks only to reinforce and sustain the existing syntax of the landscape.

Complexity Driven by Mutuality

Structures in the nature of systems that enable to morph their components and adopt different environments formally and functionally. These systems can be broken down into simple proportional rules of components that applies to different scales of structures. This project explores a structural system consists of components with simple rules to test its diverse forms that adopts diverse architectural programs.

Initially, simple geometrical component was explored with its scalability which leads to a construction of a structural system consist of several components. Then structural durability and adaptability of this combined components were tested. These data were examined to find proportional relationships between deformations of the
individual components and the synthetic system. Eventually, these rule sets were programmed into a parametric software to explore potential structural forms of larger scales. The result of this project reveals a complexity as a whole as in the nature, while it consists of components

with simple form, rule sets and transformation individually.

Structure as an Archive of Forces

This experiment was to explore structural forms that emerged based on traces of hydraulic forces on landscape from an idea of a structural form as a result of reactions against forces acting upon the space. The resulting structural forms become parasitic on the landscapes, because of the inseparable relationship between hydraulic forces and forms of topographies.

First, hydraulic analysis map intensities of hydraulic forces on topographies and where they accumulate. This map becomes a tool to regenerate landscape. The different degrees of intensities in the map translate the regenerated landscape from topographic lines into triangulated fields with different densities. Points where the hydraulic aaccumulate act as guides to push, pull, and fold the triangulated metal fields to test structural potentials in different forms. This process modifies and simplifies the triangulated patterns to generate an integrated form.

APARTMENT COMPLEX [unified diversificatio]

In the dense urban environment, the individual freedom has to be redefined based on clashing of individual activity ranges and interests, and social demands. Unlike suburban and rural residences, urban apartment complexes are symbols of this complex freedom. However, with the economical efficiency, modern apartment complexes have been composed by single unit typology rather symbolizing persecution of any freedoms. This project redesigns the apartment complex typology to satisfy the complex freedom which is the combination of unity and diversity.
Initially simple abstract patterns were composed randomly, then standardized apartment components such as bedrooms and utilities were applied to morph these initial patterns into programmed spaces. Within this evolutional sequence, several rules were set such as coherent zoning plan of each unit depending on degrees of privacies. For example, all living rooms face an access space enclosed by a glass structure to provide an interaction place for its community. The resultant apartment complex shows diverse unit plans as well as meeting spaces in its sectional quality.

This project focuses on providing fundamental functions of easy chair (seating, landing surface, and armrest) with continuous use of steel tube. The tube providing seating surface becomes armrest with surface for an user to lean on. The pipe continues to become landing surface with springiness from its bends.

Proportions of the chair were taken by several precedents, Ox-chair by Hans J Wegner and PK22 and Attitude Chair from Fritz Hansen, former by Poul Kjarholm and latter by Morten Voss.

This project was the great opportunity to learn the design development by learning the fabrication process as well as material qualities. I would like to thank faculties who assist in fabrications at DIS program in Copenhagen.
